The Human Translator Tax
At some point in every Git-based Salesforce DevOps program, a role appears. It may be called Release Manager, DevOps Coordinator, or Pipeline Lead. The title varies. The function is consistent: this person's primary job is bridging the gap between what Git thinks the system looks like and what the Salesforce org actually contains.
This role exists not because organizations want it, but because the architecture requires it.
Why the role appears
Git and Salesforce operate on different models of state. Git tracks files. Salesforce tracks components (flows, permission sets, custom objects, validation rules), each with dependencies and relationships that live in the org, not in any file.
When these two models diverge, a human reconciliation step is required. Someone has to compare what's in the repo against what's in the org, identify what's drifted, decide what to do about it, and ensure the next deployment doesn't overwrite the difference incorrectly.
No tool in a wrapper architecture performs this automatically. So the organization funds a person to do it manually, before every significant release.
What the role actually costs
The Release Manager role is rarely framed as a cost center. It shows up as a headcount: necessary, seemingly modest, often only one person. The business case for hiring this person is usually framed as "we need someone to manage releases."
What the business is actually paying for is the gap between Git's capabilities and Salesforce's requirements.
Fully loaded, a Release Manager in a Salesforce DevOps program costs between $150,000 and $230,000 annually (sourced from Salary.com, Glassdoor, and ZipRecruiter; ranges reflect seniority and geographic market). That figure includes base salary, benefits, payroll taxes, and management overhead.
That cost is fixed. It doesn't decrease as the team gets better at Git. It doesn't go away as the organization matures. It persists as long as the architectural gap requires a human translator to fill it.
The interpreter analogy
Imagine a company that needs to communicate with clients who speak a different language. Rather than build a system that understands both languages, they hire a full-time interpreter to sit between the company and every client interaction.
The interpreter is skilled. The interpretation is accurate. The company communicates effectively with its clients.
But the interpreter isn't creating value. They're absorbing the cost of a system that doesn't understand the other language natively. If the company builds or acquires a system that communicates natively, the interpreter becomes unnecessary, not because they did poor work, but because the gap they were filling no longer exists.
The Release Manager in a Git-based Salesforce pipeline is the interpreter. The Human Translator Tax is what you're paying to maintain the gap.
How the cost scales
The tax is not flat. It scales with org complexity.
A small org with a low release cadence may need a Release Manager for a fraction of their time. A complex org with multiple development teams and weekly releases may need multiple people performing this function, or one person who becomes a bottleneck, slowing releases to the rate at which they can manually validate each one.
Either way, the cost follows the complexity. As the org grows, the translation requirement grows. The human translator role doesn't scale efficiently: it scales as a headcount, not as a software capability.
The implication is that the Human Translator Tax is not a fixed cost. It's a cost that increases with the very growth the business is trying to support.
